How Did the Top 3 Perform on American Idol Season 6?

It was down to the finale three on American Idol season 6 and it was all about the number three. There were three singers left, they were each singing three songs, there were three phone numbers for each one and three judges were critiquing them.

The first song was chosen by one of the judges for the contestant to sing. For their second number, the show’s producers chose it. They chose one of their favorite songs for the final performances of the night.

They ran a little over the hour, but the show still seemed rushed, yet they still had time to ask each one a viewer question while getting in one more Coke ad.

Everyone had a really good night. It was one of the best shows of the season. There weren’t any real let down performances. They each kind of did as well as you would expect them too.

So, how were the performances and what did they sing?

American Idol Season 6 – Top 3 Performance Rankings:

  1. Melinda Doolittle – She was the third to sing and for her first song, Randy chose “I Believe In You and Me” by Whitney Houston. Randy “wanted to throw a little difficulty towards” her and thought her performance was “hot.” Paula chimed in with a “fantastic,” while Simon thought the first round went to her. For song two, the producers chose “Nutbush City Limits” by Tina Turner. Randy thought she needed to put a little of “that” in her record when she makes one. Paula said, “we love you, we love you and we love you.” Simon thought it was “another brilliant performance,” but that round two was a tie. For her final song, she chose to sing “I’m A Woman,” which she had sung earlier in the competition. Randy thinks she “could sing anything, the phonebook.” Paula goes with “awesome.” Simon thinks she has been the most consistent throughout the whole competition. That is a fact; she has definitely been at or near the top each week.
  2. Jordin Sparks – Was first to take the stage and for her first song, Simon chose “Wishing On A Star.” Randy thought it was a “very good vocal.” Paula thought that Simon had chosen a good song for her. Simon thought she sang it “brilliantly,” but didn’t like the arrangement and overall didn’t really like the performance. For her second song, the producers went with “She Works Hard For the Money.” Randy thought it was “nicely done.” Paula went with “fantastic” again. Simon thought it was “very good,” but didn’t like the songs arrangement again. For her final performance she chose to sing “I Who Have Nothing,” which I believe she also sang previously. Randy thought it was her “best performance of the night.” Paula said she “sounded really good.” Simon thought is was to “old fashioned” and wished she “had chosen another song.” It may have been an old song, but I am with Randy it was her best of the night.
  3. Blake Lewis – He was the second singer to go and for his first song, Paula chose “Roxanne” by The Police. He left out the beat-box and sang it straight, but did come off as a bit of a copycat performance of Sting, which as Simon pointed out is what usually happens when you sing one of those songs. Randy gave him an “A.” Paula “really loved it.” Simon thought it was “good,” but “not great.” For the producers’ choice, he sang “This Love” by Maroon 5. Randy said, “That’s the kind of record you should make.” Paula thought it was a “good night” for him. Simon thought he looked comfortable and that is was “better than the first” song he sang. For his pick, he chose the Robin Thicke song “When I Get You Alone.” Randy thought, “It was cool.” Paula thought that each of his songs was done very well. Simon said, “ I actually really liked that.” He added that it looked like Blake was having fun up there. He doesn’t have the best voice of the remaining singers, but for me, he is the most entertaining.

At the end of the show Randy was asked who he thought would make the finale? He said, “the two girls,” if it is based on singing. Paula was non-committal as usual. Simon wanted to see his girl Melinda make the finale.

I think that Melinda will make the finale and most likely along with Jordin. Blake will be the odd man out after the results are revealed. He is the most unique, but I don’t think it will be enough to carry him another week.

What two do you think will make the finale of American Idol Season 6?
