Prime Picks

The Vampire Diaries (The CW): Series Premiere. A young woman seems to be drawn to a young man that has recently moved back to town. The young man just happens to be a vampire. Based on The Vampire Diaries series of novels by L.J. Smith. I found the first episode to be okay and interesting enough to want to check out a second episode to see what direction the show is going to take. While it may not be saying much, this is what I consider to be the best of the three new shows The CW has to offer this fall. But, it’s the third best option in the time period when in a couple of weeks both FOX’s Bones will have returned and ABC’s Flash Forward will have debuted and potentially the fourth best in a few weeks, when NBC’s Community jumps up to lead off the night. The show is really just Twilight for the small screen, which is why even though it is slightly above mediocre, it has a real chance to actually do well for The CW.

Supernatural (The CW): Season Premiere. When the devil rises from hell, Dean, Sam and Bobby have to deal with the aftermath of the event. They also get some stunning news from Chuck.

Ace of Cakes (Food Network): New. A robot cake inspired by Doctor Who is made. A repeat episode follows. Both play again later.

Solid Selections

Iron Chef America (Food Network): Repeat. The “Flay vs. Garces” episode replays, where they compete in a “Brain Freeze Battle.” Plays again later.

Skins (BBC America): New. Naomi is trying to figure out what it is that she really wants after hearing the results of the election. Plays again later.

The Mentalist (CBS): Repeat. In “Blood Brothers” from last season, the team is investigating a boys murder at a school for troubled youth. Starts a minute after the hour and runs 59 minutes. Next week the first season finale episode replays and season two premieres the following week.

Other Option

  • Fringe (FOX): Repeat. The first season finale episode, “There’s More Than One of Everything,” replays. Season two premieres next week.
