Prime Picks

Modern Family (ABC): New. Claire isn’t sure what to make of an unexpected visit from Phil’s father.
Cougar Town (ABC): New. Jules is conflicted when her son gets accepted to many of his choice colleges. Runs 31 minutes.
In Plain Sight (USA): New. Mary has to deal with a witness who has fallen in love for the first time. Plays again later. The first four episodes of this season replay earlier in the day.
Solid Selections
Outrageous Foods (Food Network): Repeat. Get a look at some outrageous foods being served at restaurants around America. Plays again later.
Mercy (NBC): New. Inmates injured in a prison riot are brought to Mercy. Chloe is trying to get her boyfriend to get his head examined. Briggs’ career could be in jeopardy.
Happy Town (ABC): Series Premiere. A shocking murder has occurred in a small town just as a young woman has moved to town. The sheriff and his deputy son try to assure the town that a mysterious murderer has not returned to town. Starts a minute after the hour and runs 59 minutes. This isn’t a solid selection, but there isn’t anything else besides In Plain Sight in this time period that I find worth watching tonight and needed to write a little something about this somewhere. This show is just too many things trying to be crammed into one show. It’s part Romeo & Juliet romance, part October Road small town drama, part Picket Fences odd characters drama, part Twin Peaks creepy murder mystery, part maybe supernatural thriller, part, well you get the idea. The problem really isn’t that it is trying to be too many things, but that it doesn’t do any of them very well. I’ve seen the first two episodes and that was more than enough. There are lots of recognizable faces in the cast, some that I have liked in other things, like Amy Acker (Angel). But, she’s actually barely in it so far. Some of these are doing the best with what they have been given, but there is also some smaller side characters that provide some of the worst acting I’ve seen in anything this season and makes an already convoluted show even more unwatchable. ABC says, “Don’t let the name fool you.” I say, don’t let them fool you into watching this poorly constructed and executed mystery of a show.
