Prime Picks

The Simpsons (FOX): Season Premiere. Lisa grows bored upon returning home from a performing arts camp where she was encouraged to fully embrace her creative side. Runs 30 minutes.

Dexter (Showtime): Season Premiere. The season resumes exactly where it ended last season and goes from there. Michael C. Hall continues to be fascinating to watch as Dexter. I love the beginning of the season and how there is no time jump. You get to see every moment of how someone like Dexter deals with the death of his wife. Next week’s episode is even better in that respect. Lots of interesting things are setup over the first three episodes and I can’t wait to see how they play out.

The Glades (A&E): New. The murder victim in Det. Longworth’s latest case seems to have ties to an important Florida senator. Plays twice and again later twice. Next week is the season finale.

Solid Selections

Challenge (Food Network): New. Four cake designers compete to make the best Disney cake. Plays again later.

Desperate Housewives (ABC): Season Premiere. Paul Young is back on Wisteria Lane after being released from prison. Susan, Mike and M.J. are trying to get used to apartment living. Lynette’s college roommate, played by Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty), comes for a visit. Review: The return of Paul Young brings back a bit of mystery that the show hasn’t always created very well following the first season. An interesting situation, if a bit too contrived, gets setup for the Solis’. Really like the addition of Vanessa Williams as Lynette’s friend and how she is introduced. The Susan storyline didn’t really make sense to me; given what asset she sold last season. Overall, it was a good episode that lacked the funny moments that are the main reason I watch.

Brothers & Sisters (ABC): Season Premiere. It’s a year after the tragic car crash that closed out last season. Preparations are being made for a party, as Justin is returning from military service. Review: For the most part, they did a good job dealing with cast departures (Emily VanCamp and Rob Lowe) with the storylines, but there are some problems with the episode and how it works. Part of what didn’t work for me was the structure. We begin a year after the end of last season, so time has to be used to catch us up with the Walker clan. Then, the bulk of the episode takes place over a short period of time and then the last few minutes seem to jump days ahead. As a table resetter episode, it does a solid job of getting things ready to move the new season forward. On the good side, well great side really, Dave Annable, who plays Justin, does some of his best work yet on the show, as the episode for the most part revolves around him.

Other Options

  • Boardwalk Empire (HBO): New. Nucky gets a visit from Agent Van Alden. Margaret looks for help for her children.
  • Iron Chef America (Food Network): New. Chef Katsuya Fukushima challenges Iron Chef Jose Garces. Plays again later.
  • Man Men (AMC): New. An unannounced guest rattles Betty at the Francis home. Plays twice and again later.
