News & Notes

Get Californication Season 3 on DVD at AmazonTonight, NBC has The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Over on cable, BIO has the first season finale of I Survived… Beyond & Back, Comedy Central has a Denis Leary and Friends Present Douchebags and Donuts, Discovery Channel has a Wild Animal Repo special followed by the series premiere of Hogs Gone Wild, HBO has the fifth, and final, season premiere of Big Love, and TLC has a Ted Haggard: Scandalous special.

Prime Picks

The Simpsons (FOX): New. Smithers turns Moe’s into a trendy lounge. Principal Skinner has a crush on the new music teacher. Runs 30 minutes.

Californication (Showtime): New. Hank attempt to spend some time with his daughter doesn’t go as well as he hoped. Rob Lowe (Parks & Recreation) guest-stars as a wacky actor that has won an Oscar and may play Hank in the movie. Plays again later. I really like what they’ve done with this season. Underneath all the depravity is a really interesting family drama. It plays out in a way that could’ve easily worked as a series finale, but Hank will be back for a fifth season.
Episodes (Showtime): New. Sean and Beverly take a meeting with Matt LeBlanc and later run into him again at a swanky party at the network head’s place. Plays again later. Love this show. Read my full review posted last week for more on why.

Shameless (Showtime): New. Frank disappears after going out on another bender, but everyone starts to get worried when he doesn’t show up to cancel his disability check that arrives. Plays again later. I watched the second episode of the original and once again, this is an almost shot for shot remake. At least it looks like this ends somewhat next week, as the UK version’s third episode looks to be completely different than the third episode of this version. Given that next week’s episode is the one that I think is the best of the first three and the one that shows the real potential in the series, I was glad to see that it isn’t just a copy. Although, it could be a copy of a different episode from the original series, they’ve done 80+ of them so far.

Solid Selections

Food Network Challenge (Food Network): Repeat. Four chocolatiers compete to build the best “Extreme Candy Coasters” out of chocolate. Plays again later.

Desperate Housewives (ABC): New. Lynette is trying to stop her mom from marrying. Bree learns something about Keith’s past after she runs into his ex. Carlos is starting to worry about Gaby. Runs 61 minutes.

Brothers & Sisters (ABC): New. Tommy has a new girlfriend and her interest in the family’s history is bothering everyone. Starts a minute after the hour and runs 59 minutes.

Other Option

  • Downton Abbey (PBS): New. Mary’s three suitors include a Turkish diplomat; the former life of Carson, the butler, is revealed. Runs 90 minutes.
