On this episode we preview Amazon Prime’s new drama The Man in the High Castle
, which is an adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel of the same name
. It stars Alexa Davalos (Mob City, Reunion), Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars, Bones), Rupert Evans (The Village, Rogue), DJ Qualls (Z Nation), Rufus Sewell (The Pillars of the Earth, Eleventh Hour), Joel de la Fuente (Hemlock Grove) and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Revenge).
The Man in the High Castle posits an alternate reality where America has lost Word War II and it is now 1962 and the eastern United States is the Greater Nazi Reich and the western states are now the Japanese Pacific States. New hope rises amidst this oppression from films that are circulating that seem to show a different world. One where the outcome of WWII is what we know from our history books. When a woman gives her sister, played by Davalos, one of these films and is then gets murdered, so the sister wondering what could be so important watches comes to believe the films hold the key to freedom and becomes obsessed with finding their mysterious guardian, known as The Man in the High Castle.
I’ve never read the novel, but find the whole idea put forth by it to be fascinating. And, the series is able to delve deep into that dystopian alternate history. It instantly sucks you in and you want to know more about what is going on. The visualization of the times, but with the historical tweak, is so well done. The acting is good too, but this idea being carried through via the “propaganda” films is what really hooks you. I can’t wait to watch the rest and find out more about what is going on.
