New TV on DVD: Best of Saturday TV Funhouse, MacGyver, Wings and More

The Addams Family was looking for a new place to live and was Bewitched by a property on Sesame Street in The O.C. It was no Little House on the Prairie in Hannah Montana but it had all the Creature Comforts one would expect and sat right next to Jonathan Creek. It had plenty of room for their pets Greg the Bunny and Krypto the Superdog to run around and The Swan to spread its Wings. They also liked that the Groovie Goolies lived just down the street right next door to Beavis and Butt-head. Another neighbor who saw himself as the Monarch of the Glen, Hamish Macbeth, saw fit to point out his property line. He exclaimed, “That’s My Bush! And everything on this side of it is mine and I will use Slings and Arrows to protect it.” They thought he was a loser but didn’t want to use The L Word right there in front of him. Then they went in the house to check things out including the SCTV reception. They ended up watching Saturday Night Live with MacGyver as host and musical guest Degrassi The Next Generation. They enjoyed The Facts of Life sketch but the rest of the show took a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea in terms of being funny. They went back outside to find that the Justice League Unlimited patrolled the city and Batman Beyond the city limits kept the riff-raff out. The next morning I awoke to find out that none of this was true. It was just a bunch of Nightmares and Dreamscapes – From the Stories of Stephen King although they were available on DVD for some reason.

Saturday Night Live - The Best of Saturday TV FunhouseSaturday Night Live – The Best of Saturday TV Funhouse
“Saturday TV Funhouse” has been consistently the funniest part of Saturday Night Live in recent years. While the rest of the show has had its ups and downs when one of these cartoons comes on you usually forgive the rest of the broadcast. They are, “I can’t believe they just did that,” funny. You can ‘t believe some of the things Robert Smigel comes up with for these entertaining vignettes. The most amazing thing is how they recreate the animation style of some of your favorite childhood cartoons. The Peanuts cartoon where the kids figure out if they just get in a circle around something and wave their hands it will change into what it should be like the tree does in the original. It looks just like the real thing and until the wacky stuff starts happening you wouldn’t know the difference. With over 80 minutes of cartoon goodness you can’t go wrong with this DVD. Unless you don’t like envelope pushing, pop culture skewering and downright riotous comedy. Special features include commentary by Robert Smigel and others and bonus cartoons along with storyboards and artwork from some of your favorites.
