Episode: “Pilot” – Series Premiere (Season 1)
Premiere Date: Monday, October 20th, 2008
Rating: 2 out of 4 Stars
Quick Synopsis: Rita tries to get her groove back.
Long Synopsis: A hard working mom and wife that splits her time between a job she doesn’t particularly like, running the kids around and managing the household. She believes that if she can just get a few hours a week to herself, she can figure a few things out. After finding her old guitar in the garage and the prompting of a new friend, they start up a weekly jam session and are joined by a neighbor and her daughter’s boyfriend.
Review: Rita Rocks is a family comedy. It is similar in tone to The Bill Engvall Show on TBS, but not quite as funny, at least not in the two episodes that I’ve seen. But, there are a few laughs and it could be a solid comedy, if the cast comes together and things smooth out a little.
It stars Nicole Sullivan (The King of Queens, MADtv) as Rita Clemens, Tisha Campbell-Martin (My Wife and Kids, Martin) plays her postal carrier and new friend, Richard Ruccolo (Two Guys and a Girl) plays her husband, and Ian Gomez (Jake in Progress, The Drew Carrey Show) plays their unemployed neighbor. This group of sitcom veterans is why I think it may have chance to become good.
Overall, Rita Rocks is mildly funny with potential, but then I have always liked Nicole Sullivan, so that could be coloring my opinion. Yet, it’s going to have trouble grabbing viewer attention, even if it improves. I can’t see a lot of people watching this tonight instead of all the other great shows on the networks that they have already been watching.
When it moves to its regular timeslot on Tuesdays, Lincoln Heights on ABC Family is the competition on cable side, but on the network side, you have NCIS on CBS, 90210 on The CW and House on FOX. There isn’t enough here to recommend it over any of those.
Another problem is that it will be following repeats of Reba, which is a good match comedically, but not exactly as big a draw as if they had another new or returning comedy to pair it with.
Rita Rocks premieres tonight, Monday, October 20th on Lifetime. A new episode plays everyday this week and then it begins playing weekly on its regular night next Tuesday, October 28th.
